Mohawk Day
When campers were woken to the blasts of counselor Mike Gardy’s Vuvuzela horn rather than camper Avery Dibble’s trumpet, everyone knew that Thursday was not going to be a regular day. But campers were genuinely surprised to find out that Thursday was the eagerly awaited older village day. After a sleep in, the day began with campers congregating around the center of the village eating a delicious breakfast of bagels, cream cheese, and cereal. After boarding the bus at 10am, it was a short drive to Lakeside Lanes in Penn Yan, where Mohawk campers enjoyed 2 games of cosmic bowling with the ladies of Seneca. After a great morning, campers enjoyed pizza from Marks Pizzeria for lunch. Next, Mohawk caught an afternoon showing of Inception at the Glen Theater. Despite the complexity of the movie, campers loved the film and discussed it on the entire bus ride to the next destination. Jake Henning said that Inception was “heart pounding, invigorating, and jaw dropping”. Jesse Bennett commented that “while confusing, it was one of the best movies that I have seen”. Following the movie, Mohawk drove to Dunn Field for an Elmira Pioneers baseball game. With a small crowd on hand, Mohawk campers were able to get onto the field for many of the promotions that took place in between innings. Andrew Dunaif and Dean Grabie won the water balloon toss and won 2 complimentary tickets to the next Pioneers game. Josh Hurwitz was able to recognize Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face” between the 5th and 6th inning and won a bat signed by every member of the 2010 Pioneers. All of Mohawk was asked to sing “Take me out to the ball game” into the microphone during the 7th inning stretch. After the game, the campers boarded the bus and we made the drive back to camp, both exhausted from the days activities and excited for the last few days of the summer. All in all, it was a great Mohawk Day that no one will soon forget.
